Community Radio for Basildon, Billericay & Brentwood.
What is mayflower fm ?
A community radio station, run entirely by volunteers, aiming to provide a truly local alternative to the regional radio currently available in the area.
Why is this service not full time ?
The current radio licensing laws do not allow a full time community radio station to operate in this area. They do, however, make provision for groups such as ours to operate on a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) which runs for a period of 28 days only. mayflower fm have run three such RSLs over the last three years and our forthcoming broadcast will be the last before the Radio Authority invites applications for a licence to operate a full time community radio station for this area.We shall be submitting an application for this licence and are confident that if will be successful in our bid. It is our hope that mayflower fm will be on the air, full time in late 1997.
How does the community benefit ?
Above all, our programming will be community-based. As in previous RSLs, we shall provide a local forum of a unique kind where members of the local community are able to air their views, whether they represent a local charitable Organisation, local pressure group, residents association, a local business or community group or are simply concerned individuals,We also encourage local personalities - big or small - to come in and talk to us and to our listeners. Every guest is involved in the community in one way or another.mayflower fm is here to bring to the community news of what is going on in the area, whether that be a fete, a concert, a transport problem, an appeal for help or anything where the immediacy of radio can be of benefit to the community.
How can you help ?
By tuning into our transmissions between 10th November and 7th December. We can be found on 104.9fm and will be broadcasting 24 hours a day with a blend of your kind of music and news, both local and national.
If you have something you want to tell Billericay, Brentwood and the surrounding areas about, then we want to hear from you.
We need evidence of your support to add weight to our application to the Radio Authority for the full time licence. So we ask you to write to us to tell us what you think about mayflower fm, to demand a community radio station for the Billericay and Brentwood area and, we hope, to express your support for what we are doing,
Who pays for mayflower fm ?
Like other radio stations, we rely entirely upon advertising revenue from local businesses to finance the station's broadcasts. The station cannot survive without input from the community, both financial and otherwise.
Are there other ways in which you can help ?
If you would be interested in visiting the station and going on air to talk about your business, your community group, local issues or anything else of interest, or you want to help in any other way at all, please do not hesitate to contact the station manager we'd be delighted to have you on board! We hope you will support us both by listening to our transmissions and by supporting our advertisers - tell them you heard about them on mayflower fm.
